Former jump jockey John Shortt died earlier today on his 53rd birthday following a long battle with cancer.

From Colbinstown in Co. Kildare, Shortt enjoyed a successful association with the Jessica Harrington yard including big race success on the likes of Space Trucker and Dance Beat.

He also rode for a while in Britain, and retired from the saddle in 1998 with a career tally of well over 300 winners.

He continued his link with racing and the weighroom by acting as a jockey's agent, with Charlie Swan and Conor O'Dwyer among those he booked rides for.

Shortt is survived by his wife Ann Marie, daughter Alexandra, and his sisters Susan and Anne.

He is reposing at his residence - Dealgrove, Calverstown Little, Colbinstown, Co. Kildare - from 3pm until 7pm on Tuesday February 14. Removal the following day to Mount Jerome Crematoriam.

House and Crematoriam private on Wednesday, with family flowers only.

A memorial mass will take place at a later date.

A great friend to many. Rest in peace.
