GOAL collection raises over 6K at Galway

A bucket collection at the Galway Festival last Friday in aid of GOAL's work in the Horn of Africa raised nearly €6500.

The money raised also included a significant donation by John Moloney, Galway Racecourse Manager on behalf of the Racecourse.

Barry Geraghty, who came up with the idea, said: “I would like to thank everyone for their generous donations. I am absolutely delighted with the amount raised for GOAL. I would also like to thank Horse Racing Ireland and Galway Racecourse for their help in organising this fundraiser”.

GOAL CEO, John O’Shea said: “On behalf of GOAL, I would like to express my gratitude to Barry Geraghty and all the jockeys, Galway Racecourse and Horse Racing Ireland to support our aid efforts in the Horn of Africa.

O’Shea added: “Events like these not only help GOAL to deliver as much relief to some of those most affected by the famine in Somalia, but they ensure that their plight remains at the forefront of everyone’s minds.”

Over 121 million people are threatened with starvation in the Horn of Africa, because of drought and famine. GOAL is working at refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya, helping deliver food and emergency aid to over 500,000 people, most of whom have fled Somalia, the worst affected country.

GOAL has been responding to the crisis in the Somali region of Ethiopia since January 2011, and has treated 13,500 children for malnutrition, while 47 million litres of water has been distributed to 500,000 beneficiaries.

Since its inception, GOAL has spent in excess of €720 million on humanitarian programmes in more than 50 countries. The famine relief organistaion was founded in Dublin in 1977 by former sports journalist and Chief Executive, John O’Shea.
