Guineas hope Headway pleases in track gallop Headway pleased connections in a racecourse gallop at Newmarket ahead of the Qipco 2000 Guineas on Saturday week. The William Haggas-trained colt was partnered by James Doyle in the seven-furlong workout with two four-year-old stablemates Mojito (ridden by Michael Hills) and Hakeem (Richard Hills). Headway pulled about three-quarters of a length clear at the line. “It was exactly what I hoped it would be — a nice blowout,” said Haggas. “The horse was in pretty good shape and he’s pretty fit. “He moved smoothly and handled the dip all right, and relaxed well. “Our job is to get him there in one piece, at the top of his game, and we’ve got 10 days to do that.” Haggas has warned Headway will not line up for the colts’ Classic if the going is soft and he is hoping for quick conditions. “He wants fast ground as he ran twice in soft ground and ran awfully,” said the Newmarket handler. “If it’s soft he won’t go for the Guineas.” Headway, who showed his well-being on the track with an eyecatching victory in a Listed race at Lingfield last month, is generally available at 25-1 for the 2000 Guineas.
