McNamara ponders Mossey plans

Declan McNamara is still weighing up whether to give stable star Mossey Joe another run this summer.

The eight-year-old made it three wins from as many starts over fences at Cork on Friday, winning as he liked in the hands of Barry Geraghty.

McNamara hopes his charge will be up to competing at the top level in novice company when the next National Hunt season starts proper, but he might give him another run in the coming weeks while conditions suit.

"We haven't made any decision on what we're going to do yet. We're just waiting to see how he comes out of his last race," said McNamara.

"We need to decide whether to give him a break or whether to keep him going while the ground is good.

"We'll let Mossey tell us himself whether he wants to keep going for a while.

"It's tempting to keep him on the go while the ground is good, but there aren't a lot of races for him in the summer anyway as he's won three chases now.

"There is a race in Down Royal on June 17, so that might be a possibility. We probably won't make a decision until the end of the week.

"Looking to next season, he'll mix it between the good novice races and conditions races. He's a novice until the Punchestown Festival next year, so there should be some great opportunities for him.

"The ground might be a worry with him as he won't run on that heavy winter ground. We'd have to mind him with the spring in mind.

"I'm not sure we'd take him over to England as he is very highly strung and how he'd take to travelling over on the boat would be a concern."
