Review LISTOWEL 21ST SEP

Nenagh trainer Tom Hogan who has held a licence for 'a little over 2 years' recorded his biggest success to date when Penny Rich came from off the pace to win the Smithwicks Handicap Hurdle.

Sent off at 8/1, David Casey was content to hold the 6yo up at the rear before he made steady progress after the 3rd last to sweep past Tisrabraq approaching the last.

Despite flattening the final flight, he came home full of running and with 4l to spare with disappointing favourite Bamford Castle (7/4f) trailing in last under Ruby Walsh.

'He boiled up completely before Galway (8th) and was wired in the parade ring. He's a good horse and is still a novice so we'll look at a few nice juicey novice races for him next,' said Hogan of big race winner Penny Rich.

Earlier David Casey initiated a 152/1 brace when Pat Fahy's Big Frank (16/1- #33.90 on Tote) sprang a surprise in the beginners chase.

The penultimate fence was bypassed for two circuits as Tommy Treacy was attended to by the medical team after Clonmel Commercial unseated him at the first. He was later stood down for 24 hours with severe bruising.

Golden Storm (2/1-6/4f), an impressive 20l winner over hurdles on Monday, turned the 12f handicap into a procession when coming home eased down in the hands of Pat Smullen.

Frances Crowley, who trains the 3yo for the Crock Of Gold Syndicate, said, 'He's just different on that ground - he just loves it. If the ground turned up soft he could take his chance in the Ceserewitch.'

Looking further ahead, the Piltown handler added, 'I would like to think he will run at Fairyhouse in November and then the Dennys at Leopardstown.'

Frances Crowley was back in the winners enclosure after the 3m handicap hurdle when Equalise (16/1-12/1) got up in the dying stride for David Cullinane to pip Fountain Page.

Odds-on punters suffered a severe blow in the opening 1m maiden when Aidan O'Brien's Sadler's Wells colt Leopard Spot (4/6-1/2-4/7f) was narrowly defeated by 10/1 shot Windsor Beauty.

Kevin Prendergast's charge edged past the warm favourite inside the final furlong before holding the renewed effort of Leopard Spot by the minimum margin under Stephen Craine.

Favourite backers got it right in the 2m maiden hurdle when French Style (5/2-5/4f) scored easily but the concluding bumper yielded a real shock when 33/1 shot Elwyn Street and Ken Budds prevailed with Aberdeenshire (2/5f) 6th.
