Legendary trainer Mick O'Toole has passed away aged 86.

O'Toole was best known as the trainer of Gold Cup winner Davy Lad and saddled eight winners at the Cheltenham festival.

He also tasted Classic success on the Flat with Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Dickens Hill, who was runner-up in the Derby at Epsom and the Curragh behind Troy.

He is survived by his wife Una, son Ciaran, one the country's leading jockeys' agents, and daughter Mags, the highly respected bloodstock agent.

Among those to post tributes on Twitter were Barry Geraghty and HRI Chief Executive Brian Kavanagh.

Kavanagh tweeted:-

"A sad day for Irish Racing with the news of the passing of Mick O’Toole. A great trainer and a real character in every sense of the word - Micko was larger than life and always had a funny story to tell. Deepest sympathies to Úna, Ciaran, Margaret and all his family and friends."

Geraghty posted:-
