This year's Albany Stakes winner Newfangled sadly had to be put down on Friday evening after suffering from a serious pelvic injury at York on Thursday afternoon.

The John Gosden trained filly won her maiden at Newmarket in June before impressively following up in the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot.

She was sent off the even money favourite for the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at York on Thursday but was pulled up and dismounted by William Buick over four furlongs from home.

John Ferguson, racing advisor for Newfangled's owner Princess Haya of Jordan, said on Friday morning: "The vets are still investigating at this stage.

"We know she has got a serious pelvis injury.

"She has made it through the night but obviously it is a dangerous time at the moment. Fingers crossed she'll be all right."

Unfortunately the news of her demise broke on Twitter Friday evening with Gary Witheford tweeting "Sad to report Newfangled was put down today as her pelvis wasn't going to heal sufficiently. Been in the game 30 years but I still get upset."
