Peinora under a strong drive from Billy Lee on the outside, got up to deprive Kate McGivern of her first career win and Jigalo by a neck in the extended mile and a half handicap for horses rated 47-65.

The five three-year-olds in the race all competed from outside the handicap and only one, Dayrina featured at the business end of the race.

She took up the lead from Mr Lando four furlongs out and set sail for home round the final bend, however Jigalo was going strongly in the centre of the track and Peinora was closing.

The latter two went on in the final half furlong and Lee’s urgings saw Peinora prevail for trainer Timothy Doyle at 20/1. Lee put up up two pounds overweight on the mare.

Claire Doyle, wife of Timothy Doyle and owner and breeder of Peinora, said: “The trip and conditions suited her and Billy said they went a good gallop and that allowed her to get into it.

“That’s the first winner from the dam [Peineve]. She won a few races for us [three wins between 2004 and 2006]. We have a few more of her progeny at home.”

Jigalo, for Joanna Morgan was returned at 16/1 while Dayrina for Jim Bolger finished third at 8/1.

The front three were well clear at the finish as fourth-placed Cannot Give was 12 lengths in arrears of third.

Second reserve Alghanem who got into the race as there were three non-runners, went off 5/2 favourite, backed in from 4/1 in the ring, but took sixth place.

The winner paid a whopping 62.50 euro on the Tote for a win and 13.60 euro for a place.
