Quevega’s fourth foal Cameletta Vega (7/4 to 3/1) made a winning jumps debut today, landing Cork’s Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares Maiden Hurdle in the colours of her breeders the Hammer & Trowel Syndicate.

Out of the famous and still relevant six-time Cheltenham Mares Hurdle-winner Quevega, Cameletta Vega had made a winning bumper debut at the Galway festival last August and today, under Paul Townend, raced prominently and scored readily from Emily Love

Heavily-backed 4/6 favourite Dippedinmoonlight jumped poorly and faded to finish eighth.

Winning trainer Willie Mullins wasn’t present and Townend, whose only ride on Quevega yielded a 2010 Punchestown Grade 1 success, reported “everyone knows the family and while Cameletta Vega has some of their quirks, seems to have their ability as well.

“They are a good family, come in all shapes and sizes and we’d be worried if we had one of the family without quirks.”

He added “she was having a little look in front although was looking for the next jump and wanted to take them on, and she enjoyed it. She had been disappointing in bumpers but I think hurdling brings the best out in her.”

Two of Quevega’s foals have won at the top level including recent Easter Grade 1-victor Aurora Vega, who was bought by breeders Coolmore for €450,000 just nine days ago.
