Rebel Ascendant belies greenness to make winning debut Despite showing signs of greenness, the Jack Davison trained Rebel Ascendant made a winning debut when staying on well under James Ryan to land the Gowran Park Racing Club (C & G) Maiden. Tracking the leaders in the early stages, the Glass Half Full Partnership owned 14/1 chance closed up travelling easily over two-furlongs out. However, once asked to go and win his race, the gelding hung left, losing plenty of ground in the process. To his credit, the gelding straightened up inside the final furlong, leading over 50 yards out to win by one-and-a-quarter lengths. “He’s a classy horse, it’s rare one of mine will win first time out,” said Davison. “I’m probably known for training shorter distance horses but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the journey with this lad, I bought him as a yearling and we were patient. “Whatever he does in the first six months of the year is always going to be a bonus. He’s a big angular horse, unfurnished, and he’s very exciting going forward. “He was very green but credit to James he was in front at the line. He gave him a nice education down the back and just wheeled out for a clear run up the straight. It all went well. “There should be plenty more. He’s a mile-two, and could even be a mile-and-a-half horse in the future as he furnishes. “He’s just good and it’s a nice start here today. “He’s in the Classic here. Eddie Scally thankfully text me a couple of days before it closed and I said this lad was working well and we’d put him in it, so we might come back here.” Additional reporting by Gary Carson.
