Having landed his only previous win over the course and distance, Red Hugh O'Donnell once again showed his liking for the track when staying on in game fashion to land the Killarney Plaza Hotel & Spa Handicap.

Sent off 33/1 under Paddy Harnett, the Gillian Scott trained gelding was held up towards rear in the early stages of the contest.

Getting a dream run up the inside rail from over two-furlongs out, Red Hugh O'Donnell headed leader Majestic King with 150 yards to race.

Strongly pressed by both Mythical Rock and No More Porter close home, the gelding held the former by a head.

“I’m over the moon with him,” said Scott.

“He’s a tricky horse at times but he actually ran a cracker in the charity race last time and I think it helped him an awful lot, he got a bit of confidence out of it and he’s been in super form at home.

“You can never be confident enough to actually say today is the day.

“I’m delighted, I’m delighted Paddy rode him and for everyone involved.

“He won this day last year as well and I think Killarney suits him. He has a long enough straight there that when he gets into a fight he’s able to stick his head out.

“I was hopeful but lightning doesn’t strike twice. I was so happy with the way he came out of the Curragh.”
