The switch to fences this year has paid dividends for Jay Pee M who recorded his second win when justifying good support in the Kilberry Handicap Chase at Navan.

The Terence O’Brien-trained gelding is inclined to jump left and appreciated the move to this track, making headway to challenge at the second last.

The 5/2 favourite was ridden to lead on the run-in by John Shinnick and asserted in the closing stages to beat In The Trenches by a length and a half.

The pair pulled six and a half lengths clear of A Wave Of The Sea in third.

Shinnick said, “You’d want double riding fees for him!

“He’s just hard on himself. There he didn’t jump too bad but sometimes he gets it into his head and he just goes left. He’s all the time just in your right hand.

“He ran very fresh in my hands around there and took a few chances. To be fair he has ability, it’s just about managing him right.

“Conor Stone-Walsh actually helped me coming up the straight as I was actually leaning in, and he kept me straight. In fairness to him he showed a bit of heart, and I was delighted with him.

“I was fearing hitting the front so early but to be honest I had to take what was coming because he’s not the simplest. He did it well in the end.

“His last run was a bit hit and miss. In Clonmel he had other ideas, and I think going left-handed definitely suited. In Clonmel he was jumping out and giving away too much but today he was alright.

“With a bit more racing over fences he might just relax a bit. We put the hood on him today and it helped a little bit.”

He added, “That’s 22 this season so I’m delighted. Thanks very much to Terence for backing me because I wouldn’t be where I am without him.

“I had a spin in Cheltenham for him. It didn’t go to plan as the ground was a bit too quick for us but just to be riding over there was brilliant.”
