Thrifty Of Digby was very game in winning a thrilling battle with Spanish Temptress for the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap at Gowran Park.

The 17/2 shot was up 5lb for winning a Roscommon handicap in May. This was a much better race and she competed off bottom weight of 8st 13lb.

Shane Foley sent her into the lead and the pair came under challenges a furlong and a half from home. She was still boxing away inside the final furlong from Chica Guerrera and Spanish Temptress on the outer.

In the closing stages, it was Spanish Temptress who really got a scent of victory as she surged into contention. She soon edged right in second and the pair of horses flashed past the post almost in unison.

Thrifty Of Digby refused to be denied, though, and the judge gave her the verdict by a short head over the 13/2 runner-up. Chica Guerrera (4/1) dropped two and a quarter lengths away in third.

Jessica Harrington said: “She’s some tough, brave, filly. She wasn’t going to get beaten, she kept on putting her head down.

“They took her on early on as well. She really is great. She only got it on the nod and for once it’s gone the right way for me!

“She’s actually in the online sale, but we might keep her now. She loves Roscommon and here, and she goes from seven furlongs to a mile-and-a-quarter.

“There might be another day in her but she’s getting her rating up now.”
