The Willie Mullins trained Winter Fog sent favourite backers home happy when getting back up close home under Aine O'Connor to win the concluding Join Us For Hurling For Cancer Research Supported By Centra 18th August (Ladies) Maiden at Tramore.

Sent off 8/13f, the veteran sat mid division for most of the contest, as The Banger Doyle led the way for the local John Queally yard.

Pushed along to go second over two-furlongs out, Winter Fog came through to challenge with well over a furlong to race.

The Banger Doyle rallied bravely to regain the lead over 100 yards out but with the aid of the far rail, Winter Fog lunged late for a short head victory.

Patrick Mullins said: "I'd be good friends with Aine and I know the owners fairly well, so Jody very kindly let me put Aine on her and I told Jody we'd get her back somewhere else along the line.

"Aine was brilliant and got a brilliant run up the inside. That was the winning of the race. It's great for him to get his head in front because he is hard to place but always runs his race. He has been a magic horse and tries very hard. If he could go back and do what he did last season it would be great, but it's great to get a win with him anyway.

"I've no immediate plan, but I'd love to win a beginners chase with him. It would have to be somewhere with small fences though and I might keep that for next year when he's 12!"
