A Boy Named Susie 'could be a proper one' after impressive debut win Won 12-months ago by dual Derby hero Lambourn, A Boy Named Susie impressively dismissed five rivals on debut in the Irish EBF Median Sires Series Race. Trained by Donnacha O'Brien and owned by his sister Ana, the Starspangledbanner colt is out of a half-sister to Mehmas. Sent off a 10/3 chance under Gavin Ryan, the bay victor was a bit keen early on, but soon settled in second and travelled best with over two-furlongs to go. Pushed along to lead a furlong and a half out, he quickly settled matters and had three-lengths to spare at the line. The Johnny Murtagh-trained Bellamano (4/1) filled the runner-up spot under Rory Mulligan, while Dial Me In (4/5f) had no more to offer once headed by the winner and eventually finished a disappointing fourth. "We thought he was good as he did a really, really good piece of work up the Curragh a few weeks ago. This auction race looked a tough ask as he was giving away weight to winners and it is a tough track first-time-out but he is obviously just smart," the successful trainer, who was registering his third winner in as many days at Killarney, remarked. "For an auction race at Killarney, it has thrown up Iridessa, Luxembourg and last year Lambourn and a few Group 2 winners as well so it's a nice start for him. "They hacked and then sprinted but I think he could be a proper one. He has plenty of gears for a big horse." Regarding a serious fall suffered by the successful owner at the track in July 2017, he added: "It is a better experience for Ana than the last time she was here and that's her first winner as an owner as well." Ana O'Brien then said: "In fairness Donnacha always liked this horse and I'm delighted he came out and did that. It's my first time back here since my fall, so thankfully this is a much better day."
