American odyssey continues with Mendelssohn All roads lead towards the Breeders’ Cup Classic with Mendelssohn. Trainer Aidan O’Brien is keen to return to America with the son of Scat Daddy, who endured a painful experience in the Kentucky Derby. Mendelssohn hated the sloppy conditions at Churchill Downs and was allowed by Ryan Moore to come home in his own time after he suffered awful scrimmaging at the start. Before that, though, he had dazzled with an 18-and-a-half-length triumph in the UAE Derby. O’Brien said: “He’ll have one run on the dirt in America two months before the Classic at somewhere like Saratoga. “We learnt a lot from the American experience.”
