Castlegrace Paddy has won first time out in three of the last four seasons and Pat Fahy reports him to be in good shape for Saturday’s PWC Champion Chase at Gowran Park.

The 10-year-old lowered the colours of Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up A Plus Tard in the Fortria Chase at Navan on last season’s reappearance.

The five-time chase winner has yet to win beyond 2m2f but went close over 2m4f when beaten three quarters of a length by weekend rival Easy Game at Fairyhouse in April.

“He’s healthy and ready to run but he’d need a bit of rain," Fahy said on Wednesday.

“He’s run well fresh in previous seasons and he’s probably been in a bit longer. His comeback runs are usually good.

“I’d like to see a bit of rain to make it safe.”

After 14mm of rain overnight, Fahy’s wish appears to have been granted with the ground currently described as good to yielding.

A strong renewal of the Grade 2 contest looks in prospect with Queen Mother Champion Chase heroine Put The Kettle On and Galway Plate winner Royal Rendezvous also featuring among the six horses declared this morning.
