A bumper winner at Ballinrobe in May, Doctor Steinberg (5/2) made a winning start over jumps in Galway's Glenlo Abbey Hotel & Estate Maiden Hurdle.

Always close up under Paul Townend, the Willie Mullins-trained winner jumped to the front early on the final circuit and asserted after the second-last to beat Frankie John by five and a half lengths.

"There is plenty to work on as his jumping improved as I got more aggressive on him and as he got more practice," said Townend.

"He stays well and if you could keep him settled in his races, it would be ideal.

"Hurdling seems to have opened his eyes as he was having a look at a couple of them, but he has a lovely way and has matured mentally as much as anything. I thought it was a good performance and I think he can improve on it."
