Lyons eyes Phoenix date for Qatar's Pearl

Ger Lyons may run Qatar's Pearl in the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh to gain more experience.

While Lyons feels the son of Tapit will be a Group winner in time, he thinks asking him to win a race of this nature may be a bit much after just one maiden run.

He is owned by Sheikh Fahad Al Thani's Pearl Bloodstock, who also own the David Brown-trained Frederick Engels.

"He ran a promising race on debut but didn't do himself any favours," said Lyons.

"He has ability and I'd say he's definitely a stakes horse, but his mind isn't on the job yet.

"He's definitely not the finished article and he'll want seven furlongs. I just left him in because we'd paid our money and we may as well take our chance.

"It's a Group One so we are going there without any pressure and he could run into a place. It should help him grow up and then we'll go on to a maiden from there.

"He's a horse with a future but he needs to mentally grow up.

"I trained the Sheikh his first winner. We get on very well. He's a nice guy, he's flown here a couple of times. He likes to be told the truth and we fit the bill.

"I'm friends with David Redvers, I have been for years, and he's his bloodstock agent. He's good for the sport. He's given us a nice few two-year-olds and we'll do our best to make sure he enjoys it.

"He owns Frederick Engels too and he'll stay here en route to the Curragh, we might even help him if they want us to. This race is all about Frederick Engels."
