Lyons lands first Group One

Ger Lyons' Lightening Pearl (3-1) held on to win the Group One Jaguar Cars Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket.

Johnny Murtagh hit the front two furlongs out and soon sprinted clear of the chasing pack with hot-favourite Best Terms struggling under Richard Hughes.

Sunday Times (33-1) stayed on to claim second and was half-a-length away from the winner at the line with Angels Will Fall third at 16-1.

Sky Bet introuduced the winner at 16-1 for next year's 1,000 Guineas.

Murtagh said: "Ger is a great friend of mine and has done a great job.

"I'm thrilled for him to get his first Group One."

"He's good trainer when he gets the right horses.

"From day one she was always good. She won her maiden well and then was third to Maybe.

"The more racing she got, the faster she got and she was very professional.

"I think she had the race won from a long way out."

Lyons admitted it had not been too hard a decision to stump up the £14,000 to add the filly to the field.

He said: "We thought this horse could be special.

"It was a no-brainer to supplement her for this race.

"If we're still alive that (1000 Guineas) would be the plan."

Lightening Pearl looks to be finished for the year, with Lyons adding: "At the moment I'd say it's likely she'll now go into winter quarters."

Sheikh Fahad, who owns the filly through Pearl Bloodstock, was thoroughly pleased to secure a landmark success.

He said: "I'm really delighted. I've only had two years in the game and it's my first Group One - hopefully the first of many."
