Mendelssohn stepped up on his recent efforts in America to finish second in the Travers Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday.

A wide-margin winner of the UAE Derby at Meydan back in March, Mendelssohn finished last in the Kentucky Derby on his next start in May and then could muster only third in a Belmont Grade Three last time.

However, Aidan O’Brien’s runner fared better in this 10-furlong Grade One, trying to make all in the hands of Ryan Moore before finding only Catholic Boy four lengths too good at the line.

“This was a big improvement,” O’Brien’s assistant TJ Comerford told www.nyra.com.

“Aidan planned on bringing him here and he stuck to his guns. Aidan could have easily run him on the turf at home but he stuck with it over here.

“It just shows he’s coming back to his best. I’m sure he’ll be back (in the United States) soon.”
