Donagh Meyler ’s decision to take the shortest way around reaped rewards as Good Girl Kathleen ran out an easy winner of the Joe Buckley Construction Stayers Novice Hurdle at Cork.

Her four rivals charted a wide course in the Grade 3 event but Meyler hugged the rail on the Getaway mare and she hit the front going to the second-last in the three-miler.

Emmet Mullins’ charge was clear before the final flight and didn’t need to come off the bridle to record an eight-and-a-half lengths victory. Barra Rua stablemate of the winner, made most of the running but blundered at the last and lost the runner-up spot to Quantum Quest in the closing stages.

The 7/2 winner had chased home the progressive Tackletommywoowoo over course and distance early last month.

"We talked beforehand about going around the inside and I told Donagh that if it wasn't working at halfway, to change tactics, so he had free rein,” said Mullins.

“Obviously, the bends are well cut up but definitely in the straights there is a nice patch of fresh ground on the inside so we felt there was potentially an angle.

"It was always going to be risky but he said he was happy and confident all the way. It is great that it worked out.

"She is going the right way, Donagh was very confident coming and she is a mare on the up. She has a great pedigree, doesn't lack a gear either and could come back in trip."
