Profitable day in Haydock Profitable continued his ascent up the sprinting ranks when just getting the better of Mecca's Angel in a tight finish to the Temple Stakes at Haydock. Winner of the Palace House on his return to action this spring, Clive Cox's speedster appeared to face a much tougher assignment in taking on the flying mare from the north, Nunthorpe winner Mecca's Angel. With over a furlong to run the two form horses pulled clear of the remainder as Mecca's Angel, having had to take up the running just after halfway, went clear but Profitable was still going well. As Adam Kirby asked Profitable for all his worth, he appeared to lean on the mare and carried her across the track, causing Paul Mulrennan to briefly stop riding for a few strides and forcing the stewards to take a look. But as the winning distance was a neck, there was never much chance of the result being reversed. Waady made late gains to take third "We were very concerned when it rained like it did, and it always walks better here than it rides and he is better on better ground. I'm so thrilled he's done it like that," said Cox of his 8-1 winner. "All credit to her (Mecca's Angel), but I think on better ground he will power away. "The King's Stand (Royal Ascot) is the plan. I'm so thrilled, he's a star." Michael Dods felt the interference was crucial to the result. "She could have done with a lead for longer, but she's run well," he said. "But she was nearly forced through the rail, Paul had to snatch up a bit. If she'd been beaten a head rather than a neck we might have got it."
