Bartlemy Boy with a record of three wins from seven point-to-points, enjoyed his first winner under rules in the Alan Ball Memorial Hunters Steeplechase at Killarney.

It was also a red-letter day for jockey Shane Cotter who partnered his first racecourse winner.

Cotter gave the leader a couple of reminders approaching the last and, although he lost his stick on the run-in, was able to keep his mount in a good rhythm to strike by three-parts of a length at 13/2 from a staying-on Dundaniel (40/1). Lifetime Ambition the 4/6 favourite, came home third, beaten just over two lengths by the winner.

Trainer Michael 'Trixie' Barry said: "We are delighted, as he didn't qualify for the recent maiden hunters chase at Tipperary. He won his maiden point-to-point last season, so had to go straight into open company today.

"Alan (O'Sullivan) won on him in his last two runs but rode for his uncle today, so Shane rode him instead. He is a neighbour and also a very good friend of my son's.

"Shane gave him a great ride, he is a lovely horse and we'll keep him point-to-pointing and hunter chasing. He could run once more, at Listowel."

Cotter, 18 from Ballynoe, Co Cork, added: "I'm with Denis Murphy full-time and school in the afternoons for whoever needs me.

"I was champion under-21 rider last season but this season wasn't as good. I broke my leg at the start and only came back in January. Hopefully, this will bring me along for next season.

"I'm riding with the best in point-to-points, it is a great grounding so I'll wait before thinking about turning professional."
