Ryan Moore will miss most, if not all, of the latter stages of this season as Ballydoyle’s retained jockey has suffered a leg fracture, which was confirmed today by trainer Aidan O’Brien.

Wayne Lordan had taken Moore’s place on his Curragh rides today and having steered O’Brien’s Hawk Mountain to win the opening John Ormonde Wexford Sand Irish EBF Maiden, the trainer reported “Ryan had been struggling with his right leg since after the Irish Derby and had been getting a lot of stuff done to it, to keep it right.

"They initially thought it might have been muscles or ligaments but he had a scan yesterday and they found a fracture in his femur. Obviously he has no choice but to give it time and that’s the way it will be. I don’t know how long he will be, whether he’ll be one, two or three months but Ryan will know when it’s right and will get it scanned regularly to see if it is healing, so we’ll go from there.

"It’s far from a problem but it’ll take time to get right.

“The femur is obviously the biggest bone in your body and they said it was lucky it didn’t break (compound fracture) because it was that bad. They grade fractures by 1,2,3 or 4 and his was a 4, so it was that bad. He is an amazing man really to have been able to keep going with it.

“He might have aggravated it when riding a filly of ours in Germany recently so obviously had no choice but to get it checked and it is 100% the right thing.

“He is perfect, is a professional and is made of concrete, so will be back.

“Wayne (Lordan, second-rider) is obviously off (10-day suspension) for Champions Weekend so we everyone will row in and we’ll take it day by day.”

The champion trainer added "Ryan runs a lot and they think it could be running and that might have originally started it. Then in Germany, when he was going to the start on the filly [Garden Of Eden at Dusseldorf] she whipped around and he landed on his feet and it could have aggravated it and opened it up.

"They have been treating him for a lot of different stuff, the back of his knee and they thought he had burst something at the back of his heel, and they thought it might be ligaments and all this different stuff.

"In all fairness to him, he's been riding for probably two months with a fracture to his femur. Talk about concrete, that man is concrete. He’d be very lucky to ride again this season but with a little bit of time he'll be back."
