Pat Shanahan is eyeing a step up in class for Taexali after he toughed it out from the front in the pigletspantry.co.uk Maiden Stakes at Brighton.

The son of Raven's Pass was far from disgraced in finishing fifth in the very first two-year-old maiden of the Irish season at the Curragh at the end of March and was an 8-11 favourite as he made the journey to East Sussex.

Quickly away in the hands of Shane Foley, Taexali was strongly pressed by main market rival Jet Setting heading inside the last of five furlongs, but was always doing enough to land the spoils by half a length.

Shanahan said: "It's my first runner at the track and it's great to have a winner.

"He's a very quick horse, so I just felt a sharp five furlongs here would suit him and it's worked out well.

"The ground was very heavy at the Curragh and he didn't handle it. This quicker ground has definitely suited him better.

"There's a Listed race at Chester in May we might have a look at as it's a sharp five furlongs around there as well."
