Trainer Gordon Elliott sent out a rare big priced winner at the track when the Chris Hayes partnered debutant Sugar Goodson caused a 33/1 shock in the Navan Racecourse Welcomes Our Local Community Maiden at Navan.

An unraced son of Sea The Moon, the gelding was making his first career start here and was sent off 'double carpet'.

Tracking the leaders from the outset, Hayes came through to head Dreoilin over a furlong out. Soon ridden to assert, Sugar Goodson kept on well inside the final furlong to hold the late run of James J Braddock by half-a-length.

Gordon Elliott said: "I'm not surprised, to be honest.

"He did a few bits of work early on in the year and we were really, really happy with him. He just started growing a bit and we just backed off him.

"We think he is good and he is for sale obviously. Chris said he thinks he is very smart.

"He will stay well, he's a nice horse and he has been showing us all the right signs.

"He's big enough to jump."
