FormscanBy Gary Carson - This looks to have been the plan for BAYAN for a while as he's only had a couple of outings on the Flat since a great run in the Coral Cup at the Cheltenham festival. He made his return from a break when running on strongly to score on the Flat at Leopardstown three weeks ago and as a result looks to come here in top form. The run at Cheltenham was a cracker as he just gave way on the run-in when finishing third to subsequent Grade 1 winner Whisper and the classy Get Me Out Of Here. Understandably he was raised a few pounds for that but the handicapper doesn't look to have been over-harsh and connections may have done the right thing by bidding their time and waiting for another big prize. Thomas Edison looks an obvious danger and is sure to prove popular. He proved himself in good form on the Flat early in the season and has had a bit of a break since his win at the Curragh in late May. There is the suspicion that's he is capable of better than he has shown over timber to date and he could be on a nice mark over hurdles if things fall right for him. Darwins Fox lost little in defeat when going down to the classy Simenon at Tipperary last time and as a previous course winner he could go well. There is a strong English presence in this year's renewal. Purple Bay may have a tough task under top-weight after a hike for a facile win at Market Rasen. Vulcanite comes to the festival in great form but would surely only turn up here if something goes awry early in the Plate. Nicky Henderson does well with his raiders and Laudatory deserves a look while the lightly weighted Pearl Castle is another worth consideration.
