uk MAIDEN HURDLE RACE (CLASS 4) (GBB RACE) Permission was given for Betteryouthanme (IRE) to wear a red hood to post.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Hourman (FR), ridden by Alan Doyle and trained by Lucinda Russell & Michael Scudamore, which was settled in rear, before appearing to be tenderly handled from the third last hurdle to finish sixth of the eleven finishers, beaten 17¼ lengths.
The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race.
The Veterinary Officer reported that two post-race examinations of the gelding during routine testing failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated his instructions were to drop the gelding in and get him to run well and obtain the best possible placing.
He added that Hourman (FR) jumped poorly and left-handed in the back straight, before improving his position rounding the bend into the home straight.
Doyle further added that he asked Hourman (FR) for an effort after 3 out, but the gelding again missed 2 out and stayed on at one pace under a hands and heels ride, to obtain in his opinion the best possible placing.
Russell confirmed the instructions and added that in her opinion Doyle could have ridden more aggressively from after the last hurdle.
Doyle was suspended for 10 days for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing, in that he failed to make a timely, real and substantial effort from the third last hurdle to the winning line.
Following the race, Nathan Moscrop reported that he pulled up Cavalry Call (IRE) after the first hurdle as his saddle had slipped.
