Far from a classic renewal of this historic race but MONTANA GRANDE jumped well in the main and stayed on dourly for a shock win in the testing conditions. Having taken over the lead before halfway, he made a couple of mistakes including five out and had his task greatly eased as TOW THE LINE fell heavily when looking a threat at the second last. The winner is a half-brother to Character Building and obviously inherits similar reserves of stamina.

Hot favourite TOP TWIG raced wide for the better ground but was being niggled along to try and close on the leader approaching the straight. He could find no extra from two out, while SPIN BOX stayed on late from well off the pace past tired horses to take third spot.

LOGGAN LASS was just run out of third place close home having chased the leader inside the final mile, while TACIN (backed in the morning at 20/1) blundered badly at the first and made another error at the fifth. He lost touch on the final circuit before being pulled up three out.
