Following the race, Ben Jones reported that GEORGE’S LAD (IRE), placed fifth, ran too free.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of GEORGE’S LAD (IRE), placed fifth, ridden by Ben Jones and trained by Emma Lavelle, which was held up at the rear of the field before appearing to be tenderly handled in the latter stages of the race.
Jones was interviewed and shown recordings of the race; the Veterinary Officer reported a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated his instructions were to settle GEORGE’S LAD (IRE) at the rear of the field and try and finish strongly, this being his first trip over a longer distance and having not finished his previous races.
In the early stages, he felt that his mount was jumping well and travelling better than his previous runs but explained that his mount was running freely in snatches in the early stages of the race, which he reported at Scales upon weighing in and was locking on when jumping the hurdles in the back straight.
Jones further explained that he felt his mount had not quickened and stayed on at the one pace in the home straight, due to his mount running keenly in the early stages, and after making a mistake at the second last and then having to switch left-handed at the last hurdle to avoid the faller, Jones felt under the circumstances he had obtained the best possible placing.
His explanation was noted.
