Lemmy Caution had to dig deep late on to make a winning start over timber in the three-mile maiden hurdle at Punchestown, giving Gordon Elliott and Sam Ewing a double on the card.

The Gigginstown gelding was prominent throughout and jumped on at the third last flight.

He was slightly untidy at the next but asserted turning for home and looked to have things in control. The Rebel Fox stayed on well to challenge in the closing stages though and 7/4 favourite Lemmy Caution had to find more to secure a length-and-a-half win.

There was a stewards enquiry called as the winner drifted left on the run-in but the result was unchanged.

“Sam said he’s a big baby and he wasn’t doing a stroke the whole way around,” said Elliott.

“He said until he passed the line he never thought he was going to win because he was pulling up everywhere. He’s just a big raw horse, who wants a jump and good ground.

“I’d say he’s a big chaser. I’d say he couldn’t handle soft ground in bumpers. It’s grand that he’s won now anyway.”
