Old Magnier silks on the mark for grandsons John Magnier’s old silks were carried to success for the first time by new custodians today, as the Coolmore supremo’s grandsons Max and Tom Wachman scored with La Fogata (11/4) in Punchestown’s opening Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden. Prior to changing to dark navy colours, Magnier’s ‘yellow with black-star’ silks gained fame with Attitude Adjuster under Ted Walsh in the 1986 Cheltenham Foxhunters Chase, and were revived recently and carried by 2020-winner Cecelia Clementine for the Wachman, Magnier and Shanahan Partnership. Today La Fogata - owned in partnership with Mr Duffy and Max O'Reilly Hyland, credited Max and Tom Wachman with first wins when proving to be a rare last-to-first victor of an Irish maiden race, scoring by a half-length from White Sand Beach . Trainer Ger Lyons was represented by brother and assistant Shane, who said “we think it is Max and Tom’s first winner in their own colours, so we’re delighted as they were very famous colours. “La Fogata that well, her next race will be the Silken Gilder at the Curragh on October 21st and she seems to appreciate a big galloping track. Colin feels she’ll get a little bit further next year. “Although she’s by Mehmas we can only do what she’s showing us and she’s showing us that she wants that trip. “She was fourth in a Group 3 last time so the main aim now is to get black-type, which would prove to be a good season for her. She’s a funny filly, she jumps smart enough but can be a little bit timid and lets them go off in front. Fair play to Colin (Keane, winning jockey) he used his head by not forcing her. “They might have gone a little bit quick on a testing track and she looked good in the straight.” Quotes from Gary Carson
