The Dermot Weld-trained Brosna Town wore down Eighty Eight close home to land the spoils in the opening apprentice handicap at Dundalk this afternoon.

Eighty Eight stole a few lengths half-a-mile from out and had a six length advantage turning for home in the mile-and-a-half contest.

Jack Kearney got a good tune from Brosna Town though and the 2/1 favourite stuck on well inside the final furlong to grab the front-runner late on for a half-length success.

The winner had been third on his first visit to the all-weather track last month.

Kearney said: "Thank God (he stays well)!

"He had a very good run the last day, ridden patiently and he kept on well.

"Today, Mr Weld told me ' wake him up out of the stalls and get him up good and handy. All he does is stay going'.

"I was flat out for most of the way, going as quick as I wanted. All he does is stay going, he galloped well out to the line.

"I felt like I was never getting to him (leader Eighty Eight) but, once I got rolling inside the final furlong, I was kind of happy in my position. My only doubt was if the other horse stayed.

"Definitely he will get further."
