Deauville to drop back to a mile Deauville is likely to be dropped in trip following his narrow defeat in the Arlington Million on Saturday night. Aidan O'Brien's four-year-old hit the front in the latter stages of the Grade One contest in Chicago, but was caught late on by eventual winner Beach Patrol and runner-up Fanciful Angel. Deauville was beaten less than a length into third place and O'Brien believes he could be more effective back at a mile. He said: "It looks like he's just not getting a mile and a quarter. Obviously his best run was in the Queen Anne at Ascot over a mile, so he's probably going to have to come back. "In the Meld Stakes at Leopardstown it was the same thing, at the line Jim Bolger's horse (Moonlight Magic) collared him. As he's getting older, he's getting quicker rather than having more stamina. "He's a horse that we'll travel loads with. All those big races around the world from a mile and a quarter back he could go for." Deauville was one of three runners on the night for the Ballydoyle handler. Taj Mahal ran a fine race to fill the runner-up spot in the Secretariat Stakes, but Rain Goddess was only eighth in the Beverly D. Stakes. "Taj Mahal ran a good solid race again and he's a good solid horse," O'Brien added. "The filly was grand. She was drawn a little bit wide and that probably didn't suit her. She's probably better than that run, Ryan (Moore) thought."
