Jockey Niall Kelly has been released from hospital following a fall on his first ride as a professional at Clonmel on Thursday.

Kelly was making his debut in the pro ranks aboard the Philip Rothwell-trained All Honours in the Martinstown Opportunity Handicap Hurdle when his mount slipped up entering the straight when out of contention.

Kelly was taken to hospital on a spinal board, but Dr Adrian McGoldrick, senior medical officer for the Irish Turf Club, is pleased to report his injuries are not serious.

McGoldrick said: "He was just put on the spinal board as a precaution, but he's grand and is only suffering from mild concussion.

"He's been released from hospital now and he's back home. He'll have to have a concussion test on Tuesday before he's allowed to ride again."

Kelly was one of a number of jockeys to come to grief during an incident-packed afternoon at the Powerstown Park circuit.

Dual champion jockey Davy Russell and Andrew McNamara took particularly heavy falls later in the afternoon, but McGoldrick reports all riders to be fine and ready for the weekend action
