Aidan O’Brien has a strong record in the Chester Vase, so it was no surprise to see Lambourn sent off as the 11/8 favourite under Ryan Moore. He was asked the question a long way out, but he responded superbly and went on to win a shade cosily in the end. Although he will need to improve to trouble the other main contenders, stamina looks to be his forte, so he should be staying on late in the day. Not far behind Derby Favourite Delacroix heads the 2025 Epsom Derby market, and Lambourn wasn’t far behind him at Leopardstown on his reappearance over an inadequate trip. He was beaten by just over two lengths, outpaced at a key stage before staying on again, despite being no match for the winner. He had Puppet Master behind him that day, who subsequently went on to win the Derby Trial at Lingfield, so the form has been well boosted. Outpaced in the Beresford Stakes Lambourn disappointed in the Beresford Stakes behind Hotazhell over 1m. He was badly outpaced and simply couldn’t go with them towards the business end. The 1m trip was always going to be on the sharp side for him, and Lambourn was never likely to come into his own until he stepped up in distance. A rare trip to Craon O’Brien sent Lambourn on an unexpected trip to Craon in France, where he fully delivered on his second start to win the Listed event. He was slowly into his stride and needed urging early on, but soon got himself into contention and stayed on strongly to win by a narrow margin under Christophe Soumillon. Derby up next He comes into the race as a 20/1 chance at the time of writing, and he could well outrun those odds - provided he doesn’t get too outpaced. Lambourn looks to have plenty of stamina and, if he’s in contention 2f out, there won’t be many finishing stronger than him. He appears quite versatile regarding the ground, having won on good going at Chester and on very soft in France, so conditions shouldn’t pose a problem on race day. There should be plenty more to come over this trip, and he looks to hold a live each-way chance for the master trainer O’Brien.
