The Gordon Elliott-trained Slanagaibhgoleir recorded a first success over fences when staying on best to win the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Beginners Chase at Down Royal.

Prominent throughout under Jordan Gainford, the 9/1 chance headed long time leader Supreme Jet after the third-last fence.

Taking control on the run to two out, the J.P. McManus owned gelding found plenty for pressure, keeping on to beat Birmingham Alabama by three-and-three-quarter lengths.

Jordan Gainford said: "Going to Clonmel, we were hopeful and he came here today in good form.

"He stepped up today and it is great to get his head in front. He has been a little bit frustrating, so it is nice for him to do that.

"He took to them (fences) very well. He made a right mistake at the last in Clonmel. He jumped very well today on the whole.

"In fairness, Phillip (Enright, Supreme Jet) went a good, even gallop. I didn't want to get into a battle with him."
