Formscan By Michael Graham - With a rating of 121, Saxon Warrior is very hard to get away from. He lost his unbeaten tag in the Epsom Derby where the camber of the track patently failed to suit him as he finished fourth to Masar. On this much more straightforward course, he should take plenty of beating but he has been priced up accordingly at 8/11. There certainly looks to be each-way value to be had. One that catches the eye is OLD PERSIAN at 12/1. He is the third-highest rated horse in the race and is a guaranteed stayer on fast ground. He has been supplemented for this after winning the Group Two King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot last weekend. The same team of Charlie Appleby, Godolphin and William Buick landed the Epsom Derby with Masar and it looks significant that they have supplemented Old Persian. Dee Ex Bee is only rated 3lb inferior to Saxon Warrior and was runner-up in the Epsom Derby. He ought to be bang in contention, however, he may prefer a bit more juice in the ground. There would be some cheer if Platinum Warrior won the Derby for Newbridge native Michael Halford. His Galileo colt is progressive and won a Group Three over 10 furlongs last month. Halford expects him to see out a mile and a half so he is in line for a good cheque. Bandua is very much unexposed after winning a couple of four-runner races on rain-softened ground. It's a big ask but Dermot Weld is a master at laying out horses for the biggest days.
