Mangan reflects on colourful owner Futter's passing
I’d never have won the National only for Mike Futter as Monty’s Pass would not pass a vet for anybody but he rang me up and said ‘if he’s healthy, I don’t want any vet near him’. He bought him on my word over the phone and the rest is history. Mike was a colourful character and gave me full control of what I wanted to do with the horse. After he finished second in the Topham Trophy, I knew then I had a horse for the National. I hadn’t much connections with him afterwards but some of the syndicate were involved in Whinstone Boy with me and I won the Thyestes Chase for them and Mike went other places.
Wardens Whisper eclipsed by eye-catching runner-up
Wardens Whisper deserved that and God he ran his heart out here the last day. Tiernan (Power Roche, winning jockey) is very, very good but I thought at Limerick over Christmas wasn’t his finest moment on this horse. He deserved it and I’m delighted for the lads. Referencing the name of the horse, his owners are all prison wardens, so hence they are all tiny lads. It was very important for me as I had been facing 20 big lads whenever the horse was beaten!. Simon Besanson heads the syndicate and has been very good to me. We’ll give the horse a little holiday now.
The Story So Far strikes for Byrnes family
Philip gave him a lovely ride and went out with a plan to be handy. He was a little lairy over the first but once he got a lead and into a rhythm, he was good. He was the highest-rated horse, so all he did was run to his rating. He looks around but that's why he has headgear on and three miles is his trip. He'll go handicapping now. The syndicate (Milkers Syndicate) are all local and from Ballingarry: they've had a few horses with us over the years and it is great to get another winner for them.
Tom Hogan lands Cork feature
She is a grand mare and has now won a bit of everything,. She runs her race every day but does absolutely nothing at home, so you have to run her nearly every fortnight to keep her right. . The dam was a good mare for me and this mare could win a decent enough race on the Flat over a trip - she wants 1m6f on the Flat. . Cian Quirke is very good to ride and we'll look at another handicap hurdle with her next. Her owner Alan Jamieson is a brilliant guy but he finds it hard to get over to see her. He has runners today in England so has the first leg of a double up!
Jay Pee M makes the breakthrough under Shinnick
Kings Halo back to his best under Mullins
It is great to get a winner in Cork as it's not easy and is always competitive around here,. Kings Halo is a great horse for our yard and while he isn't the easiest to train, is a good horse when he is right. Danny was excellent on him, he is some master of judging pace and went wider as he felt it was the thing to do. He is a winter horse, so the ground was a worry beforehand but he got away with it. I'm delighted and delighted for the syndicate who are with me years. You'd love if he snuck into a Leinster National now as he stays three miles and has operated around Naas.
