Ricky Doyle produced the Cormac Farrell trained Sticktotheplan from off the pace to land the opening Listed COLM QUINN BMW Novice Hurdle at Galway.

Sent off the 22/1 outsider of the seven runners, the gelding was held up in rear as the Willie Mullins trained pair La Note Verte and Vicar Street raced first and second.

Sticktotheplan moved strongly in fourth place after jumping two out but Doyle had to sit patiently and wait for a gap to appear entering the straight.

Vicar Street led La Note Verte on the run to the last but Doyle soon covered that move, switching to the inside to take over in front early on the run-in.

Soon kicking clear, Sticktotheplan went on to beat Vicar Street by two-and-a-quarter lengths, with Emily Love keeping on nicely for third.

Cormac Farrell said: "We fancied him and had a few quid on as we've always thought he was a very smart horse. It has taken time for the penny to drop and to race correctly. His jumping has come together and he has a huge future.

"I tried to sell him on several occasions but nobody would buy him so I'm delighted, as I'll be properly paid for him at some stage! I'm a big fan and he is a very exciting horse. He is a fine horse and that ground is as good as he'd want.

"It is so exciting to be in Galway as we don't get many winners so to have a nice horse to run in a Listed race is great."

Owner Douglas Taylor said "This wasn't his first plan as we had a plan for him one day (last February) but he disappointed. His partner-in-crime Great Attitude from that day (in a bet-double) runs in the next race."

Farrell then added "We initially sold Great Attitude to the Cleary's before his first race as he was getting sour and needed a change of scenery but they (Cleary's) were struggling to find for a horse to gallop with, so we took him back six or eight weeks ago.

"Both horses had been working together before this week and getting this win is great."
