Big Island ground out a game victory in the KONE Handicap at Galway for trainer John Feane. Starting Monday made a bold bid from the front in the mile contest but was claimed by Big Island just inside the final furlong.

The Canford Cliffs gelding found plenty for Dylan Browne McMonagle in the closing stages to record a half length win over Cisco Disco

5/1 shot Big Island was recording his second win of the campaign and had been placed on his two most recent outings.

"He ran a cracker in a 0-100 the last day when a couple of pounds out of the handicap and we thought the ground would suit here,” said Feane.

"He got a good lead from Billy Lee (on Starting Monday) and it gave him something to aim at and was doing enough in the last furlong. Dylan is two from two on him.

"He likes a cut in the ground and hopefully he could be an Irish Lincoln horse next year."
