After being notoriously hard to win with, the Flemensfirth gelding put it all together on his first start for Gordon Elliott, beating Rory O Moore by three and three parts of a length. That form reads better since, with Rory O Moore's demolition of the opposition at Naas, and you'd have to think that Shrapnel has a much better chance here than his 118-rating would imply. Gordon Elliott said of him lately: "He won well the last day at Galway and he is a nice horse that came to us a while ago. He has always worked nicely and I can see him paying his way nicely in novice hurdles. He handles soft ground and he'll get two and a half miles and maybe a bit further in time. We are delighted to have him. He likes the soft ground as well which is a plus." The former point-to-point scorer is preferred to Willie Mullins' 141-rated Turban. Mullins said lately that he'd be launching this fellow over fences soon, so it could be significant that he comes here and he'll doubtless be hard to beat at his best. The long absent Stony Grey Soil would be much respected if strong in the market.
