Rounding the first bend the winner, Rivers Corner (GB), made contact with the rail causing the gelding to become unbalanced and to give a slight bump to Known (IRE), which was later pulled up.
After viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved and that it had not improved the placing of Rivers Corner (GB).
The winner, Rivers Corner (GB), appeared to show improved form compared with its previous run at Plumpton on 22 January where the gelding finished fourth of twelve beaten 28 lengths.
The explanation given by Syd Hosie that the gelding had benefitted from a step up in trip from 2 miles 4 furlongs to 3 miles and had also appreciated being ridden more positively on this occasion, was noted.
Rivers Corner (GB) was routine tested.
The performance of Pentire Head (IRE), which was pulled up, was considered.
It was noted that the representative of Paul Nicholls could offer no explanation for the gelding’s performance.
The performance of EDE’IFFS ROCK, which started favourite and finished fifth of five finishers, beaten 83¼ lengths, was considered.
The explanation given by Bill Turner that the mare had not stayed the 3 mile trip on the Heavy going on this occasion, was noted.
Following the race, Richie McLernon reported that Pride Rock (IRE), which was pulled up, stopped quickly; the Veterinary Officer examined the gelding post-race and found Pride Rock (IRE) to have an irregular heartbeat.
The Veterinary Officer reported that The Bold Thady (IRE), placed third, showed signs of post-race ataxia.
