George Downing was unseated from Charlotte Corday (IRE) in the Parade Ring.
Having been checked by the Doctor at the start, Downing was deemed fit to ride.
Charlotte Corday (IRE), trained by Ed Walker, spread a plate on the way to the start.
As the trainer had not indicated at the declaration stage that the filly should be withdrawn in the event of losing a shoe, Charlotte Corday (IRE) ran without its right-fore shoe.
Halfway down the back straight, Grindleton (GB), placed fourth, shifted left-handed when racing greenly, briefly hampering Norcross Brow (GB), placed second, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved.
Joanna Mason, the rider of Howsham (GB), which finished fifth of nine runners, beaten 4 lengths, was asked to explain her riding in the home straight.
The Stewards interviewed Mason and viewed recordings of the race.
Mason explained that approaching the home bend, she was further back than she would have liked as although the gelding was drawn well, it had jumped slowly from stall 4 and she became obliged to take up a position towards the rear of the field.
Mason further added that having turned for home, she began to encourage Howsham (GB) using her whip down the gelding’s right shoulder whilst keeping both hands on the reins, until Howsham (GB) became briefly unbalanced when running greenly approaching the one furlong marker and entering a slight dip on the surface.
Shortly thereafter, approaching and passing the ½ furlong marker, she said the gelding began to hang left-handed behind Grindleton (GB), and required correction with the right-rein for a number of strides, but despite this, continued to find the line well in the manner of a horse which may appreciate further in time.
Her explanation was noted.
Following the race, George Downing reported that Charlotte Corday (IRE), unplaced, ran green.
