THE FREE RACE EVENING THURSDAY 18TH JUNE HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 4) (ARC Summer Chase Series Qualifier) (GBB RACE) An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Pep Talking (GB), placed second, ridden by Gavin Sheehan, trained by Billy Aprahamian, Seaview Rock (GB), placed third, ridden by James Bowen, trained by Charles & Adam Pogson, Vocito (IRE), placed fourth, ridden by Sean Bowen, trained by Olly Murphy and My Friend Sean (IRE), placed fifth, ridden by Stan Sheppard, in order to establish the circumstances in which the winner Duke Of Luckley (IRE), was able to establish a sizeable lead through the early and middle stages of the race.
Gavin Sheehan stated that his instructions were to race in a prominent position and to make the running if able to.
Sheehan stated that despite his urgings when racing in third position behind the leader, Pep Talking (GB), was unable to make up significant ground until asking his mount for its finishing effort turning into the home straight.
James Bowen said that his instructions were to settle at the rear of the field behind runners, and that Seaview Rock (GB), had made several jumping errors and was never in a position to challenge the winner despite asking his mount for its effort from three out and briefly racing in second position behind Duke Of Luckley (IRE), having been last turning in.
Sean Bowen stated that his instructions were to try and make the running but that he felt Vocito (IRE) was running flat, a fact that he had reported at scales, and had been unable to keep pace with the winner after jumping the third fence, despite being ridden to do so.
Stan Shepherd’s instructions were to keep his mount together for as long as possible to get My Friend Sean (IRE) to finish of its race as it had weakened after racing prominently on its penultimate start and felt that My Friend Sean (IRE), which had run similarly during this race, was never in a position to challenge any other runner.
Their explanations were noted.
Following the race, Sean Bowen reported that Vocito (IRE), placed fourth, ran flat.
