Permission was given for Whistledown (GB) to be mounted on course and to wear a red hood to post.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Whistledown (GB), ridden by George Bass and trained by Mick Channon, which raced prominently and was ridden confidently, and only asked for an effort late to finish second, beaten by a neck.
The rider and the trainer’s representative were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the filly failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated his instructions were to race prominently and leave his challenge as late as possible.
The trainer’s representative confirmed these instructions as given by the trainer.
George Bass explained that having ridden Whistledown (GB) in a similar manner recently over this course and distance, she had not gone through with her effort and was nearly caught late despite winning.
With this in mind today, and with the filly having travelled strongly into the race, he had opted to ask for his effort slightly later but Whistledown (GB) had not picked up as expected.
Having heard the evidence and viewed recordings of this and the filly's previous races, the Stewards noted their explanation.
Following the race Connor Planas reported the Prince Of Flight (GB), unplaced, was slowly away, and Joey Haynes reported that Elementofsurprise (GB), unplaced, hung right off the bend.
