An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race after interference inside the final furlong when the winner Weddell Sea (IRE) ridden by Paul Mulrennan interfered with The Craftymaster (GB), placed second, ridden by William Carson.
The Stewards considered that the interference had not improved Weddell Sea (IRE)’s placing as The Craftymaster (GB) had initially hung left-handed approaching the final furlong, carrying Weddell Sea (IRE) marginally off its intended line before Weddell Sea (IRE) drifted right-handed carrying The Craftymaster (GB) off its intended line in the final furlong.
Although the interference and carry caused by Weddell Sea (IRE) to The Craftymaster (GB) was greater than that caused by The Craftymaster (GB) to Weddell Sea (IRE), Weddell Sea (IRE) always appeared to be holding The Craftymaster (GB) and with a distance of a head at the line, the Stewards were not satisfied that with an uninterrupted run to the line that The Craftymaster (GB) would have finished in front of Weddell Sea (IRE).
Mulrennan was cautioned for careless riding as he failed to take sufficient steps to prevent his mount drifting right-handed carrying The Craftymaster (GB) off its intended line.
