THE WELLMAN CARS HAMILTON HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6) An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Saxon Grace (IRE), ridden by Shane Gray and trained by Daragh Bourke, which was help up in rear before being asked for an effort 1 furlong out, and staying on strongly to finish third of the eight runners, beaten half a length.
The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the filly failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated his instructions were to drop out Saxon Grace (IRE) and get her to switch off.
He added that the filly had never raced beyond 7 furlongs, and they were concerned that the filly would not get the trip and therefore his instructions were to leave his challenge as late as possible.
He further added that the filly is quirky and has a history of hanging left-handed.
Gray explained that he hoped that by tracking Defence Missile (IRE), unplaced, the gelding would take him further into the race but Defence Missile (IRE) failed to quicken off a slow pace which meant that he was slightly later producing his challenge.
Gray finally added that the filly had run on well to be beaten a neck and a head into third place.
The trainer confirmed the instructions and added that he was satisfied with the ride and explained that this run was the best run the filly had produced since joining his yard.
Their explanations were noted.
An enquiry was held to consider interference approximately 3 furlongs out, involving EVELYN’S PHOENIX (FR), unplaced, ridden by Sean Kirrane, the winner, Pisanello (IRE), ridden by Conor Whiteley, and Braes Of Doune (GB), placed fourth, ridden by Paul Mulrennan.
The Stewards found that the interference between EVELYN’S PHOENIX (FR) and Pisanello (IRE) was accidental, in that Whiteley had edged left-handed at the same time as Kirrane edged right-handed to hold his line, resulting in Whiteley being moved slightly off his intended line, which resulted in Mulrennan becoming momentarily tight of room against the rail.
