Permission was given for Five Ways (GB), Hilitany (GB), The Publican's Son (USA) and Wise Approach (IRE) to wear a red hood to the start.
Shortly after the start, The Publican's Son (USA), unplaced, ducked left-handed, resulting in the winner, Wise Approach (IRE), clipping heels, stumbling and losing ground, but after viewing a recording of the incident it was found that no riding offence was involved.
An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race after interference on the run to the line when Brussels (GB), placed second, ridden by W M Lordan, interfered with Coppull (GB), placed third, ridden by Rossa Ryan.
Having heard evidence from the riders and considering the proximity of this incident to the winning post, the ground and momentum lost as well as the initial influence of the winner, Wise Approach (IRE) on Brussels (GB), the Stewards could not be satisfied that Brussels (GB) had initiated the incident and further, that with an uninterrupted run to the line Coppull (GB) would have finished in front of Brussels (GB), as the ground and momentum lost was less than the distance of a short head.
The Stewards therefore ordered the placings to remain unaltered.
The interference was deemed to be accidental as Brussels (GB) had shied away from Wise Approach (IRE) who had shifted sharply towards Brussels (GB) who in turn bumped and took Coppull (GB) off its intended line shortly before the winning line.
